Weekend homework:

READ CHAPTERS 5 & 6 in our course textbook
(YOU MAY ALSO READ CHAPTERS 3 & 7 AS REINFORCEMENT OF THE WORK WE DID ON WED. & THURS.)

A.) Do your blog reflection about today's (Friday's) class - what did you learn about? How do you see it being useful in your professional/teaching life? What was easy? What was difficult? (Take into consideration the readings in our text book).

B) You are to create a book trailer on any children's book of your choice. You could use Photostory (unless you have a Mac at home) or VoiceThread.
For some samples of book trailers, click here. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT USING VOICETHREAD AND PHOTOSTORY, GO TO OUR DIGITAL STORYTELLING PAGE.
  • Embed the VoiceThread in your wiki. If you use Photostory, you will need to upload it to YouTube, and then embed the video in your wiki efolio.
  • Please write a few sentences about your work under it in your wiki; address which tool you chose, the purpose of the word cloud.
  • Finally, write another blog reflection about your book trailer; how could this be used in your future library? What could you have students do?
How could a tool like this could be used in the library curriculum? Share a few ideas.

C) Create a WORD CLOUD that advertises what goes on in your future school library. Decide in your mind what kind of library this is: elementary, middle school, or high school. Imagine that you would embed it on the homepage of your school library website. The idea is to market your library and what goes on in it. Choose one of the word cloud generators from the list below. For an example of this, check out my library website. (If you do not see the word cloud, check to see if there is a yellow toolbar appearing on your computer that is questioning the security of the page and click 'allow'.) Also, look at this:

  1. Tagul
  2. Wordle is a fun site for creating posters using a set of words--maybe from a poem, or a a review assignment, or a descriptive assignment. The words are transformed into an interesting pattern or "word cloud." Kids can create their own mini-posters with words for vocabulary or on a specific theme. For a great article on how to use this, click on WordleTips. Hint- use the tilde sign (~) whenever you want a complete phrase, when you are pasting text into the “Paste in a bunch of text” window, insert that character between any words that you want to keep together. For example, if you are writing "Math is Fun", write Math~is~Fun and the phrase will be a complete thought. Tips on Ways to Use Wordles can be found here.
  3. Taxgedo also allows custom shapes- choose any words- or a theme such the Family dogs. :-) Many shapes from which to choose.
You should embed or upload the finished word cloud into your wiki. Please write a few sentences about your work; address which tool you chose, the purpose of the word cloud, and finally talk about how a tool like this could be used in the library curriculum, giving a few ideas. Take into consideration the readings in our text book.

D) Work on your wiki portfolio, as needed, throughout the remainder of our course and before final due date for final project. **REMINDER: DON'T FORGET TO ADD THE HOMEPAGE OF YOUR WIKI PORTFOLIO TO OUR CLASS URL PAGE IN OUR COURSE WIKI. DON'T FORGET TO INVITE ME INTO YOUR WIKI.

IF YOU HAVE TIME, VISIT YOUR CLASSMATE'S BLOGS AND READ SOME POSTS! COMMENT AND GIVE THEM FEEDBACK!
